The 1999 Rally of Great Britain - the UK's largest annual sporting event - retains the basic three-day format pioneered last year.
Explained Rally Manager Malcolm Neill: "Rule changes under discussion at the FIA may compel us to make major changes to the format and timetable of the Rally next year. Under the circumstances, we have opted for minimal changes this year. We have concentrated on reducing road mileage - by over 220 miles - and moving some service areas to assist with future developments."
The 1999 event covers 1,157 miles (1861 kilometres) in three days. The competitive part of the Rally covers 239 miles (385 kilometres) on 22 timed special stages. Said Neill: "This remains the most economical event in the World Championship, especially for a private crew. The route includes only seven separate service areas, making is possible to tackle the Rally with only one service van."
The 1999 Rally of Great Britain starts as usual with a day of heavily-promoted spectator stages on mixed surfaces, but the meat of the event comprises two days on gravel Forestry Commission roads in Wales.
The Rally is again based at Cheltenham Racecourse, where the superb facilities include space for 70,000 spectators and free parking for 25,000 cars. This world-class venue plays host to the pre-event Rally Show, the start, finish, both overnight halts and two timed special stages.
