On last year's rally, in co-operation with Carless Fuels, areas were set up at the exit from some service parks to allow the World Championship teams to refuel. This facility was only used by a limited number of the teams.
For 1998 the FIA have ruled that, for safety reasons, refuelling of all cars must take place outside the service parks in special refuelling areas set up beyond the service Out time control.
These refuelling areas will take up between 300 - 400 m2, the whole site will be surrounded by barriers and only the crew, 2 mechanics per car and fire personnel will be permitted inside the area. It is planned to provide fire appliances staffed by trained personnel at each area, the marshalling requirements will only be for traffic management at the entrance and exit of these areas.
The transport of fuel to these areas is currently under discussion, on the early rounds of the World Championship the major teams were permitted to use a vehicle to bring fuel into the area whilst the remaining teams had to carry their fuel to the area, we are looking at ways that we can be helpful to all teams on this matter.
The refuelling of all competing cars must this year take place in areas after the Out control from each Service Park. For those teams using the FIA control fuel as well as some other types of fuel a company has been appointed to transport their fuel to each refuel area and provide safety cover at these locations. All other teams in the event will have to have their fuel carried into the refuel area by a maximum of two people from each team.
