14:30 to 19:30 NETWORK Q RAC RALLY SHOW Gates open: 14:30 Admission: L5.50 per person (children under 16 L2.50) Description: An opportunity to see all the competing cars and teams - all the top drivers will be in attendance. Come and see the cars at close quarters, talk to the team members and collect autographs. Hosted by Murray Walker there will be stunt driving and motorcycling displays, celebrity appearances, live music, hot air balloon and fireworks displays and much, much more. Not to be missed. LEG 1 - SATURDAY 23RD NOVEMBER 1996 CHESTER TO LEEDS 07:00 - START - CHESTER Gates open: 06:00 Admission: Free Location: Chester Racecourse. Access via turnstiles on Nuns Road. Routes: follow signs to Chester from all directions and RAC signs to venue. Car parks: Sealand Road, Little Roodee and in City Centre. Facilities: commentary, catering, grandstand seating 10:32 - STAGE 1 - KERSHOPE Stage length: 23.07 miles Car parks open: Midnight Friday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Furness District MC, Kirkby Lonsdale MC, Morecambe CC Starting in England and finishing in Scotland! Mainly fast rugged roads with a very twisty finishing section along the riverside and many deceptive long bumpy straights. Location: 2 miles south east of Newcastleton Routes: from the south, approach on the A69 and B6318 to Roadhead, follow signs continuing north on unclassified road to car park A and B (do not attempt to reach this car park from the north). Alternatively, approach from Newcastleton village on the B6357 and turn east over bridge onto unclassified road at the south end of the village. Continue eastwards for 1- miles to car park C near Dykecrofts. Car parks: Car park A is 7 miles north of Roadhead and gives access to several mid-stage viewing points. Car park B will be used as an overflow, if necessary. Car park C (1200 cars) gives easy access to very good viewing at the finish of the stage. Warning: very narrow access roads to the car parks so no parking will be allowed on public road (police will be patrolling) and no spectator access to Kershope Bridge. Fastest time 22 mins 50 secs (Eriksson). 11:58 - STAGE 2 - RICCARTON Stage length: 9.01 miles Car parks open: Midnight Friday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Hawick & Border CC The first of the two stages on the Rally totally in Scotland using the high and fast tracks over the moors. Location: 8 miles south east of Hawick on the B6357. Routes: approach from Hawick or Carter Bar on the A6088, turning south on to the B6357 one mile south-east of Bonchester Bridge. After 2- miles turn right into car park A at "Hell's Hole". Alternatively, approach from Newcastleton, travel north east on the B6357 for approximately 12 miles and turn left into car park B. Car parks: Car Parks A (1000 cars) and B (200 cars) are both on forest roads with a fairly short walk to the stage and good viewing points. Warning: no parking on the public roads (Police will be patrolling). Fact file: length of stage in 1995 - 8.80 miles. Fastest time 7 mins 28 secs (McRae) 12:23 - STAGE 3 - HYNDLEE Stage length: 6.65 miles Car parks open: Midnight Friday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: East Fife MC, 55 CC. The second Scottish stage taking the rally through to loop round to Carter Bar and back into England. Location: 8 miles south east of Hawick on the B6357. Routes: Use the Stage 2 car park routes Car parks: There are no car parks for this stage. Use stage 2 car parks and walk Warning: no parking on the public roads (Police will be patrolling). Fact file: last used in 1993 when the Rally was nearly brought to a halt with a iwhite-outi of deep snow. 13:00 - STAGE 4 - REDESDALE Stage length: 9.99 miles Car parks open: 07:00 Saturday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Whickham MC Not used since 1991 this stage is the first of 3 in the massive Kielder Forest starting just off the A68 at Byrness and crossing the Forest Drive and Pennine Way. Twisty at first then into long undulating straights with some tight bends. A popular and easily accessed stage. Location: Just south of the A68 near Byrness Routes: Car park D from Kielder, the remainder from the A68 near Byrness (between Otterburn and Carter Bar). Car parks: Car Park A is off the A68 near the Forest Drive entrance. Car park B is along the Forest Drive and car park C is on the Pennine Way - both accessed from the Forest Drive entrance south of Byrness on the A68. Car park D is also on the Forest Drive but accessed from the Kielder Village end - a long drive to the stage. Warning: no parking on the A68 - police will be patrolling. Factfile: Holds the record for the most retirements on a stage with 12 cars off, or stopped, in 1991. 13:29 - STAGE 5 - FALSTONE Stage length: 11.64 miles Car parks open: 07:00 Saturday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Hadrian MSC, Post Office MC, Border Ecosse MC. Not used since 1993, now with a much improved road surface - fast straights and bends interspersed with some tight corners. Location: North of Falstone and 10 miles from Bellingham Routes: Car park accessed via Falstone Village. From the north, via Saughtree, through Kielder village and follow road past Kielder dam to car park. From Chollerford via the B6320 through Wark to Bellingham and "C200" towards Kielder Village (Chollerford is 5 miles north of Hexham at the junction of the B6318 and B6320). Car parks: Car Park E is on forest roads accessing the mid part of the stage. Warning: no parking on the C200 - police will be patrolling. Be patient - queues sometimes develop. Factfile: Used in the year of the snow when the severity of the weather caused the abandonment of the stage for the later runners. 14:28 - STAGE 6 - PUNDERSHAW Stage length: 35.77 miles Car parks open: 07:00 Saturday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Tynemouth, Border Ecosse, Spadeadam, CSMA, South of Scotland, SMMC. Again the longest of the Rally and the reverse of last yearis stage running over the classic open Kielder roads. Very fast, curving route with deep ditches to test the drivers to their limits. The supreme test of man and machine with the later part of the field running in darkness. Also used by the Leeds-RAC International Historic Rally with the stage split into two (Chirdonhead and Pundershaw) with the cars starting at 11:13 and 11:48. Location: 3 miles west of Bellingham. Routes: from Chollerford via the B6320 through Wark then unclassified towards and beyond Whygate. Watch for split after Wark and turn right to car park H & I or left to car park J. For car park F and G, continue from Wark via Bellingham towards Kielder Village. Car parks off "C200" prior to and beyond Stannersburn. (Chollerford is 5 miles north of Hexham at the junction of the B6318 and B6320). Car parks K & L accessed via Churnsike Lodge from the west at Gilsland (off B6318) to a further mid point. These car parks were introduced last year and traffic flow and parking should be improved this year. They are ideal for spectators coming from the west. Car parks: All on forest roads except for car park G which is in a field near the middle of the stage. Warning: One way traffic flow in operation to car parks H, I & J - enter only at Wark. Police control at all main junctions. Fact file: length of the two stages in 1995 - 36.61 miles. Fastest time 31 mins 36 secs (Sainz). Colin McRae lost the lead here last year due to a puncture. 17:27 - STAGE 7 - THE COUNTY DURHAM STAGE Stage length: 15.97 miles Car parks open: 08:00 Saturday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Durham A.C., Darlington, CSMA Very popular with spectators, the stage has generally good surfaces on both fast and twisty sections, this year run in darkness. Near the start of the stage is the famous Hamsterley ford. Also used by the Leeds-RAC International Historic Rally - first car due 14:22 Location: Near Hamsterley village, 3 miles west of the A68 Routes: from North and south use the A1(M) leaving at junction 58 onto the A68. Turn off A68 to Hamsterley. Car parks: Very large car park utilising most of the non-rally roads to the south of the forest. Warning: Long traffic queues are normal, sometimes extending back to the A68. You are advised to arrive early. Do not abandon your car on the access roads - it may be towed away. Do not park in Hamsterley village. Anyone trying to park on the village green will be shot at dawn!! Those attempting to reach the car park via Wolsingham will be routed onto the A68 and through Hamsterley village. Fact file: length of stage in 1995 - 16.92 miles. Fastest time 14 mins 34 secs (McRae) 19:12 & 19:21- STAGE 8 & 9 - CROFT 1 and 2 SUPER SPECIAL Stage length: 1.54 miles Car parks open: 06:00 Saturday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: Ripon MSC, Darlington & DMC uses the newly refurbished Croft motor race and rallycross circuit. Also used by the Leeds-RAC International Historic Rally with first car due 07:55 in the morning and again at 16:10 Location: 6 miles south of Darlington Routes: from all directions use A167 to Dalton on Tees then follow direction signs. Car parks: Permanent car parks within the circuit. Warning: Do not try to approach the circuit other than via the A167. LEG 2 - SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER 1996 LEEDS TO CHESTER 07:30 - RE-START - LEEDS Admission: Free Location: The Royal Armouries Museum Routes: follow signs iThe Armouriesi from all directions. Car parks: Public car parks and roadside subject to restrictions. 08:03 - STAGE 10 - THE LEEDS SPECIAL STAGE Stage length: 2.66 miles Car parks open: 04:00 Sunday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: Trackrod MC Mixture of tarmac and loose gravel through Park with fast start, twisty through spectator area and short fast section to finish. Excellent viewing from natural banking next to stage. The Leeds-RAC International Historic Rally will attempt the stage twice from 12:21 after the main event. Location: Temple Newsam Park near Leeds. Routes: from A63 follow signs to Temple Newsam Park. From south-west, south, south-east and west - from M62 junction 30 northbound follow A642 through Oulton, Swillington to A63 at Garforth and follow signs. From north west, north, north-east and east - via A63 to Whitkirk then follows signs. Car parks: One large car park. Facilities: .catering, commentary, toilets. Warning: Bullerthorpe Lane and Pontefract Lane will be closed. Fact file: length of stage in 1995 - 2.74 miles. Fastest time 3 mins 29 secs (Makinen). Part of the stage is affected by the new A1 - M1 link road under construction. 09:27 - STAGE 11 - MOBIL 1 AT CHATSWORTH Stage length: 2.83 miles Car parks open: 07:30 Sunday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: One Eleven MC, Rotherham MC, Sheffield & Hallamshire MC, Matlock MC, Mid Derbyshire MC, CSMA, Metropolitan Police, Springhill, Michelin, Heart. Exciting stage which has again been improved to give even better spectator viewing. The stage contains two watersplashes, two spectacular jumps and 14 junctions with a new finish location alongside the house. This will be the main televised stage on the event. Location: 8 miles west of Chesterfield, between Baslow and Bakewell in the Derbyshire Peak District. Routes: from Chesterfield and M1, approach via A619 (use car park A). From Sheffield, approach via A621 and enter at the Golden Gate (use car park B). >From Manchester and the West, approach via A623 or A619 and follow Chatsworth signs to the main entrance off B6012 (use car park C). From Matlock and Derby, approach via A6 and B6012 entering at Beeley Lodge (use car park D). Car parks: enter Car Parks from A619 or B6012 for direct access to the stage. Facilities: catering, commentary, toilets. Warning: there will be no overnight parking. The road from Beeley village to Beeley Moor will be closed. Fact file: length of stage in 1995 - 5.26 miles. Fastest time 5 mins 56 secs (McRae) 11:04 - STAGE 12 - CLUMBER PARK Stage length: 5.11 miles Car parks open: 08:00 Sunday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: Nat West MC, Dukeries MC, North Humberside MC, CSMA East Midlands, CSMA North London, Lincs Louth MC, Mablethorpe, Lindholme MSC. The fastest tarmac stage in the rally on roads through the National Trust parkland. Many tight corners and the infamous Clumber Bridge make this a most challenging stage. Prior to the main Event, cars in the Leeds-RAC International Historic Rally will attempt the stage twice from 08:11 Location: 3 miles south of Worksop off the B6034. Routes: from the A1 (north and south), approach via the A57 only. From Worksop and north west, use the Worksop bypass and the B6034 entering Clumber at Truemans Lodge. From Mansfield and Nottingham use the A616 then B6034 entering the park at Carburton. From M1, leave at junction 30 and follow the A619 or A616 and then onto the B6034. Car parks: large car parks near to middle of stage accessed from B6034 and the A57. Facilities: commentary, catering, toilets, footbridge over Clumber Lake. Fastest time 4 mins 49 secs (Eriksson) 12:31 & 12:44 - STAGE 13 and 14 - BEECHDALE SAAB DONINGTON SUPER SPECIAL 1 & 2 Stage length: 3.86 miles Spectator Entrance open: 09:00 Sunday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: Eastwood MC., Loughborough MC, CSMA, Midlands, B.M.R.MC, Cambridge CC. Uses both the circuit and gravel roads. Narrow in places with tricky corners. Access around the outside of the stage gives excellent viewing. The stage is used twice with the cars starting at 30 second intervals. Prior to the main Event, cars in the Leeds-RAC International Historic Rally will attempt the stage twice from 10:01. Location: 3 miles west of M1 near Castle Donington. Routes: from the south, leave M1 at junction 23A then via A453. From the north, leave M1 at junction 24 then follow the signs to Donington. From Derby use A6 and B6540 through Castle Donington. From West Midlands use M42/A42 onto A447 then A453. Car parks: follow the signs to the large car parks around the main circuit entrance. These all give access to the spectator entrances at Coppice and McCleans Facilities: catering, commentary, toilets, Donington Racing Museum. Warning: Please follow any police temporary diversions which may be in operation to speed up traffic access to the stage. There is no access from Melbourne Lane and no access to paddock area. Fastest time - stage 13 - 3 mins 45 secs (Makinen); stage 14 - 3 mins 42 secs (Makinen). 14:37 - STAGE 15 - TOYOTA CASTROL TRENTHAM Stage length: 2.51 miles Car parks open: 09:00 Saturday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: Potteries & Newcastle, Ecurie Royal Oak, 118 MC. A welcome return of a favourite spectator stage. Using a different route to when it was last used in 1993, it retains the popular features of the Shooting Lodge hairpin, the ford and includes a fast gravel to tarmac to gravel section through easy to view parkland. Location: 4 miles south of Newcastle under Lyme on the A34, 2 miles from junction 15 of the M6. Routes: access to all car parks is from the A34. If travelling from the south on the M6 leave at junction 14 and join the A34. From the north leave at junction 15 then via A500 to the A34. DO NOT attempt to approach on the A5182. Car parks: three car parks on the east side. Facilities: catering, commentary and toilets. Warning: do not attempt to gain access to the A34 from the A5182 - the traffic lights will be controlled to give priority to A34 traffic. Do not park on the A34 - your car will be removed. Factfile: not used since 1993 15:25 - STAGE 16 - FERODO TATTON PARK Stage length: 4.73 miles Car parks open: 10:00 Sunday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: Knutsford MC, Lancashire & Cheshire MC, Northern University MCs., MAC Open parkland with fast winding roads interspersed with wide bends, a hairpin and chicane. The stage starts in front of the Mansion where a disabled parking and viewing area is situated. Location: One mile north of Knutsford on A50 Stoke to Warrington road and 2 miles from junction 19 of the M6 and 3 miles south of junction 7 of the M56. Routes: from the M6 follow the RAC signs to Rostherne Gate via A556 - do not attempt to approach through Rostherne Village. From Knutsford, follow RAC signs north on A50 and enter through Mere Gate. Knutsford Town Gate is available for pedestrians only. Disabled spectators are advised to enter through Mere Gate to gain access to a special parking and spectator area. Car parks: 6000 car park spaces within Tatton Park or car parks in Knutsford Town with a 1- mile walk to stage. Facilities: commentary, catering, toilets. Warning: Do not park on nearby access roads or on the streets in Knutsford - you may find a parking ticket or your vehicle has been towed away. Fastest time 5 mins 41 secs (Sainz) 16:28 - STAGE 17 - BRITISH AEROSPACE CHESTER Stage length: 1.65 miles Car parks open: 13:00 Sunday Admission: L7 per person (children under 16 L1) Principal marshalling clubs: British Rally Marshals Club, Wolverhampton & South Staffs CC. This is a unique stage on this yearis rally. Run on roads within the British Aerospace factory and their airfield, the stage has been planned to provide fast flowing bends on a concrete / tarmac surface with excellent viewing. Although run after dark, the lighting from the buildings will enable the best of the action to be seen. Location: 5 miles west of Chester. Routes: approach from the A55 Chester bypass. Follow the signs to the airfield entrance. Car parks: On the airfield runways, 800-1000 metres from the stage. Facilities: commentary and toilets Warning: Do not attempt to park on the surrounding roads - particularly the A5104 - your car will be towed away. 17:33 - FINISH OF LEG - CHESTER Gates open: 16:30 Admission: L1 per person Location: Chester Racecourse. LEG 3 - MONDAY 25 NOVEMBER 1996 CHESTER TO CHESTER 02:00 - RE-START - CHESTER Admission: none - Racecourse not open to public Location: Chester Racecourse. Routes: follow signs to Chester from all directions and RAC sign. Car parks: Sealand Road, Little Roodee and in City Centre. 04:00 - STAGE 18 - DYFNANT Stage length: 13.46 miles Car parks open: 20:00 Sunday Parking:: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Quinton MC, Midland A.C. Mainly fast open roads with long flowing corners but with several tight sections. Can be affected by early morning adverse weather. Location: 2 miles west of Llanfyllin. Routes: Use A458 (Welshpool to Dolgellau road) and B4395 o mile west of Llangadfan. All car parks are accessed via B4395. Car parks: Car Park A (Green Gates) and B (Forest Trail) give access to mid stage, car park C (The Warren) gives access to east side of stage. Facilities: catering Warning: certain roads in the area will be closed with no spectator access to Stage start or finish. No parking on nearby narrow roads - Police will be active. Fastest time 13 mins 05 secs (McRae) 05:59 - STAGE 19 - SWEET LAMB HAFREN Stage length: 24.37 miles Car parks open: 20:00 Sunday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: CSMA. Long and testing stage through flowing forest roads popular with both drivers and spectators. Location: 6 miles west of Llanidloes near Clywedog Reservoir. Routes: from the south, via A470 and A44. From the north and east via A470 then B4518 via Llanidloes for approximately 3 miles onto unclassified road alongside Clywedog Lake (car parks A, B, C). From the west, directly off A44 at Sweetlamb to car park D Car parks: Car Park A (motor homes), B (Afon Biga) C (Mynydd), D (Sweet Lamb) - 4x4 parking available. Facilities: catering. toilets at Sweetlamb. Warning: no access via Staylittle or Glan-y-nant to Old Hall - these roads will be closed. All approach roads are narrow and twisty - please drive with care. NO roadside parking - police will be active. Fact file: length of stage in 1995 - 17.90 miles. Much of the route is on high ground so it may be affected by fog and low cloud. Location:. 3 miles east of Devilis Bridge. Routes: all routes via A44, A4120, B4574. Car parks: large car park south of the stage off the B4574 with access to several good viewing points. Warning: no roadside parking on A4120 or B4574. Factfile: Not used since 1993 09:01 - STAGE 21 - PANTPERTHOG Stage length: 9.55 miles Car parks open: 20:00 Sunday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Harlech & DMC. A difficult stage on narrow, twisty and hilly roads often affected by mist and rain. Location: 2.5 miles north of Machynlleth, west of A487. Routes: from the south, either use A487 via Machynlleth to car park A or A487 via Machynlleth, B4404 and unclassified road north to car park B. Car parks: To the east of the Stage off the A487, car parks A and B give access to start, finish and mid-points. Warning: cars parked beside the road or on verges will be towed away. Fastest time 8 mins 59 secs (McRae) 09:31 - STAGE 22 - DYFI Stage length: 14.61 miles Car parks open: 20:00 Sunday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: MG Car Club. A popular stage with drivers due to its wide sweeping corners and excellent road surface but with several difficult tight hairpins. Location: 4 miles north of Machynlleth, east of A487. Routes: from the north, use A487 and turn left to Esgairgeiliog to car parks C and D. From the south, use A487 via Machynlleth, B4404 and unclassified road north to car parks E and F. From the south east, use A489 from Newtown, A470, A489 for about 1 mile, B4404 and turn north on unclassified road to car parks E and F. From the east, approach via A458, then south on A470 to Aberangell and turn west on unclassified road to car parks G & H. Car parks: Car Parks C to H, all on forest roads giving access to many mid- stage viewing areas. Warning: arrive early or face a long walk. Fact file: length of stage in 1995 - 14.62 miles. Classic Welsh stage with good surface but deceptive tight bends Location: 7 miles north of Machynlleth, west of A470. Routes: from the east, approach via the A458 then south on the A470 to Aberangell and turn west on the unclassified road to Car Parks G and H. From the north, via A470 from Dolgellau and turn west at Aberangell Car parks: These car parks also give access to the north end of stage 22. Fact file: length of stage in 1995 - 9.16 miles. Fastest time 8 mins 43 secs (McRae) 12:13 - STAGE 24 - PENMACHNO SOUTH Stage length: 8.32 miles Car parks open: 07:00 Monday Parking: L5 per car Principal marshalling clubs: Wallasey MC, Stockport MC A mixture of very fast roads, steep hills, tight hairpins and fearsome drops. Location: 3 miles south of A5 at Conwy Falls (near Betws-y-Coed). Routes: from the south, via Ffestiniog, B4391, B4407 and north on unclassified road to car park A. This route is also used by competitors and will be closed to spectators 30 minutes prior to the first car. From the north, via A5 and B4406 to car park A. Car parks: Car park A, south of Penmachno giving access to start and mid point hairpin. Warning: Parking at the roadside or on verges is strictly forbidden - the rally will be stopped if the school bus can not get through - offenders will be towed away and charged for the privilege. Location: 2 miles south of A5 at Conwy Falls (near Betws-y-Coed). Routes: from the south, via Ffestiniog, B4391, B4407 and north on unclassified road to car park B. The sting in the tail! Good firm roads which are very slippery when wet. Some long straights with deceptive crests together with sharp junctions. Location: 10 miles west of Ruthin. Routes: from the south, from A5 via B5105. From the east and North from Ruthin via B5105, unclassified road to Cyffylliog and unclassified to car park entrance A. Car parks: Car park entrances B, C, D, E and F are all accessed from the B5105, car park entrance A from Cyffylliog. All give access to good mid- stage viewing. Warning: no roadside parking. Access via turnstiles on Nuns Road. Routes: follow signs to Chester from all directions and RAC signs to venue. Car parks: Sealand Road and in City Centre. Facilities: commentary, catering, grandstand seating. SERVICE AREAS Most service areas on the Rally are unable to accommodate spectators due to their size or location and spectators are asked not to attempt to gain access to them. Two service areas, however, are open to spectators: At end of Leg 1, Saturday 23 November Car and Coach park D, Elland Road, Leeds First car due 21:23 Parking: in Car Park C opposite Approach from M621 junction 1 via A6110 (outer ring road) At end of Leg 3, Monday 25 November Bodelwyddan Castle, Off the A55 (Chester to Abergele Road) First car due 15:07 Parking: on ONE side of adjacent public road Approach via A55 No parking on A55 - if you do, your car will be towed away by the police SAFETY IN SERVICE AREAS DO NOT try to take your car into the service area. DO NOT block the access roads to the service area. DO NOT crowd the service crews when they are working on the cars. DO NOT stand around the time controls at the entrance and exit of the Service Area. BE VIGILANT for cars and service vehicles moving in the service area and do not block their route.
