| CAR 3 | DUNCAN | "That's the first time we've experienced any snow and ice," said Duncan. "We were being very careful, but it was extremely difficult to get any kind of rhythm going." |
| CAR 5 | SCHWARZ | "We had to drive 12 miles with a puncture on the rear and also one on the front, but it was impossible to tell what caused them. It is very frozen," said Schwarz. |
| CAR 9 | EVANS | Co driver Davies said "Those were some of the nastiest conditions I've ever seen - it was virtually impossible to keep the car under control. We spun twice at least and drove the last mile with a puncture, but I guess we only lost around 30 seconds." Commenting on the ice, Evans said " The best thing to do with this stuff is put it in your drinks" |
| CAR 10 | McRAE | Spun and stalled after tight right-hander and lost around 30 seconds when the engine proved difficult to start. "This is as bad as it was in '93," said McRae. "The sequential gearbox made it a bit diffcult to select reverse when we spun." |
| CAR 14 | BRUNDLE | In his first ever RAC, Formula 1 star Martin Brundle is having a baptism of fire on the first day. "To say it was slippery would be an understatement," he said, shaking his head in disbelief. Added his co-driver, Roger Freeman: "It's like driving on 'snot' ice." |

| CAR 19 | SINGH | Speaking to Tony Mason for the BBC's Top Gear programme, the driver said: "It's unbelievable in there - I've never seen anything like this in my life!" |

| CAR 25 | HIGGINS | Lost four minutes when car fell off jack after stopping to change puncture two miles into stage. |
| CAR 28 | OREILLE | Team working in service to rectify handling problems. The driver commented: "It does not seem to turn in properly." |
| CAR 37 | BUCKLEY | Lost reverse gear. "I think it's because we've been using it too much," said the driver. |
