Introduction

The Inter-Association Road Rally Challenge Trophy

This annual event is hosted by one of the 15 Regional Associations of Motor Clubs within the MSA. The country is divided into six large regions and allocated to one of those. The Regional Associations that fall within each of these larger regions then fight it out amongst themselves to host the rally. Having decided which Association will promote the rally, a club or two is then chosen to actually run the event.

Traditionally the event has a strong `navigational' flavour rather than a standard road rally flavour. The event was originally the idea of Brian Ottridge (RAFMSA) as a means of pitting road rally crews from all over the UK against each other since the loss of Motoring News events make this no longer possible. There is no British Road Rally Championship currently although the current trends in modern road rallying may make this a growing possibility if only the MSA was sufficiently open-minded to consider it with a view to wanting to make it happen.

There 2005 event will be the Bullnose Road Rally, promoted by Oxford Motor Club, hosted by AWMMC. The scheduled date is Saturday, 10th September, 2005.  More details will be published here. Let us hope the permit will be  road rally one otherwise nobody north of Watford will bother turning up!

Inter-Regional Road Rally 2004

There 2004 event will be hosted by ANICC and should be a cracker! The scheduled date is Friday, 12th of November, 2004.  More details will be published here.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 2003

There was no 2003 event as no-one could be bothered to organise it. EMAMC was the responsible
Regional Association.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 2002

The 2002 Rally will be promoted by Border Ecosse Car Club on behalf of the East of Scotland Association of Car Clubs (ESACC) and will be called the Early Winter Rally. The following is taken from the pre-event flyer:

"The Early Winter Rally features 200 miles of the best roads in the Scottish Borders, starting and finishing in Jedburgh on Saturday 16th November 2002.

The two main organisers are Monty Pearson (01361) 8844448, (CoC) and Derek Mclean (01368) 850367 (Asst. CoC).

We are both experienced organisers in our own right, but we have not collaborated before. Working together is becoming quite interesting for us. We hope it will be just as interesting for you.

Make a note in your diary. Plans are already well advanced. It will be a navigational event, with some timing to the second. Accomodation is being arranged through the Scottish Borders Tourist Board, with lots of choice available, i.e. locations, prices etc.

Regs. are already available in draft form, although some changes will undoubtedly be made before actual publication.

We hope to see there in exactly a years time.

Derek McLean"

Inter-Regional Road Rally 2000

From Dave Thomas (dave@anwcc.freeserve.co.uk)

The host Association for this event is Association of North-Western Car Clubs (ANWCC) of which I am Championship Secretary.  Last year we were
invited (told) that we would be hosting the event so selected a club and
event that met with the criteria as we knew it.  Then, last year, came
Ludlow Castle's Peak Revs which should have been the event but wasn't as it
did not meet a whole host of criteria that few knew about, including ANWCC.

... so, we set about finding out the rules for the Inter-Association
Navigational Road Rally Challenge, and these included the date (had to be
October/November), had to be navigational and there were a few other things
which were not a problem.  So, our original choice of event was canned, and
High Peak & 061 MC's Road Rally in October met with all the criteria except, arguably,
the navigational one as the event did run to "normal" road rally rules.

... anyway, since then, the Regional Committee has sat and the event is now
permissible as either a Road Rally or a Navigational Rally.  High Peak & 061 MC's
organising team are happy, and the event will take place in Derbyshire as
planned, to their usual format and everyone can have a damn good thrash
around the narrow lanes in the accepted way that road rallies are supposed
to be run (to the book) - please avoid the drystone walls!

Here is a report from PRAR.

The O61 Road Rally ran on 21&22-Oct-2000. Details from Martin Payne on (01663) 745074

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1999

The 1999 Inter-Regional road rally is due to be held in the West Midlands region, hosted by the AWMMC by Ludlow Castle Motor Club on November 13th/14th. Contact is Miss Jane Powell, 21 Grenfell Road, St JAmes, Hereford , HR1 2QR (01432-270821). The event will be the Peak Revs Road Rally.  The Peak Revs was no longer deemed to be the Inter-Regional Road Rally since it ran on a road rally permit rather than a navigational one!

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1998

The 1998 Inter-Association Road Rally (The Dawnbreaker) was hosted by the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs run by The Northern Ireland Motor Club Ltd. on Friday October 16th to Saturday October 17th. The event was a navigational rally of approximately 140 miles with a rest-halt of at least one hour using the same area as the 1992 event.

According to the organisers:
"We hope our experiences of the 1992 event will ensure a more enjoyable formula for the 1998 version. Again, we will arrange an attractive package for mainland crews, to include return(!) ferry tickets, entry fee and breakfast. We hope to welcome many mainland crews to Northern Ireland in October".

Having just returned from the IA I'm surprised nobody has posted anything about it - so here is my 2 penny-worth!
If any of the organising team subscribe to this, please accept a huge thank you for organising a fantastic event and for being so welcoming.
For those of you that missed it, the event was about 150 miles of the most incredible roads I have ever rallied on - I called enough 90's to last me until the year 2000! The action was non-stop with 'usual' code boards replaced by intermediate regularity controls, where lots of time was lost by all. The navigation was pitched about right for the roads with a few variations from the normal stuff but all explained.
The results were handed out on computer produced sheets during the event at various controls and the provisional results posted before most had finished breakfast - other organisers please note it is possible to do it!
Congratulations to the winning teams - ANICC 'B' team beating off the ANICC 'A' team into second place. The LCAMC team finished third and first mainland team. Congratulations also to Mike and Cath - they so nearly won but a second place is still very impressive over there - believe me! Unfortunately, we didn't manage to negotiate one of the 90's but thanks to one of the Scottish team members who stopped and pulled us out of the hedge we managed to go on and finish the event.
The trip home was even more entertaining, with all ferries to Holyhead cancelled because of the weather forcing us into an overnight stay in Dublin before the long trip home on Sunday.
I'm sure all that made the journey will think it worthwhile and for those that didn't - you missed something!
Thanks again to Drew and his team
Mark Mark Goodman
On Behalf of Frazer Graham and my self (car 4) and the other members of the ANECCC team I can only echo Mark's views.
The organisers had simplified the navigation presentations ( comapared to the '92 event) and the hours halt allowed us to see results and swap stories!. Howeverthe roads were still brilliant!! ( i belive we used 3 stges from next yearsUlster Raly) and the Ordnance survey of NI seem to have a sense of humour by missing out the odd bend or three.
Thanks to Drew and his team for another first class event. Roll on the next one.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1997

The 1997 Inter-Association Road Rally Teams Champion is the Association of Central Southern Motor Clubs (ACSMC) by virtue of their "B" team consisting of The 1st overall individual crew was Steve and Richard Pashley although three crews cleaned the event which was tie-split on order of posting the entry form off! Naturally, all crews got copies of the ASRs on the same day...

Inorder to split many other ties due to the very low penalties (easy roads and trivial route instructions), navigators handwriting was examined in fine detail and, despite using seven letter/digit codeboards, many received fails for getting one letter out of seven wrong. There were an awful lot of unhappy crews at results time: perhaps its time to remember what road rallying should be test of!

The 1997 rally ran on 6th/7th December 1997, hosted by the Association of North East Midlands Motor Clubs (ANEMMC), using OS Sheets 106(B3) and 107(B1). The Beaver Rally was run by Beverley and District Motor Club with Graeme Potter (01482) 708790 as Clerk of the Course. The route consisted of around 150 miles none of which is whites. The route instructions were very simple including: map references (via and avoid), spot heights, gridlines, grid squares, tulips, herringbones.

PRAR has written a more extensive review of the Beaver.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1996

The 1996 rally ran on 26th October 1996, hosted by the (AWSMSC), using OS Sheets 57, 64 and 65. Start venue was Stirling Enterprise Park Stirling. The promoting Club was Lanarkshire CC, the Clerk of the Course was Peter Martin 0141 776 8222. The Assitant CoC and Entries Sec was Douglas McLoughlan 01324 612907. There was a timed to the second test down Forrestburn Hillclimb and 4 miles of forestry used by way of novelty! The Team Trophy was won by the ACSMC

Further details are available here

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1995

The 1995 rally (The Twister Rally) was run on November 25/26th, hosted by the London Counties Association of Motor Clubs (LCAMC) for the third time, the promoting Club was SODC, the Clerk of the Course was Pete Tilling. OS Sheets 166 and 167 were used. The ACSMC teams for the 95 event were. A report of the rally has been written by PRAR. The Team Trophy was won by the AEMC with the 1st overall individual crew being Chris "Wimp" Martin and Stuart Martingale.

The 1994 rally was to have been hosted by the Welsh Association of Motor Clubs (WAMC).

The Rally was running on 1/2 October but was postponed to the 14th January 1995 on the Island of Anglessey. The original ACSMC teams (which didn't take compete in the end) are given here.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1992

The 1992 event (The Dawnbreaker Rally) was hosted by the Association of Northern Ireland of Car Clubs (ANICC) and promoted by ? Motor Club.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1991

The 1991 event (The Barnard Trophy Rally) was also hosted by the London Counties Association of Motor Clubs, run in the South Humberside area and promoted by Lincoln Motorcycle and Car Club Ltd.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1990

The 1990 event (The Teviotdale Rally) was hosted by a Scottish Association of Motor Clubs.

Here are some comments from David Crooke:
Judging by the description, the 1990 IARR will have been Hawick & Border CC's Teviotdale Rally. The infamous overlap was caused by two editions of sheets 73 and 74, where they used different alignments of the national grid. The white in question is the old road running parallel to the A68 just south of the river Lauder; on one alignment of the grid, a certain vertical line crosses the current A68, and on the other it cuts the white. Standard local knowledge in the Borders. Been there, dropped it ... :( This is no more with the advent of the new 73 B and 74 B1 editions.
Here are some more comments by Nigel Mollett:

The second one was run the following year in Scotland. Start in Hawick. Can't remember much coz we missed a TC on a white which was on a overlapped portion of the map - it appeared on one map but not on the other. The organisers had said at the start that one map took priority over the other in cases of overlaps. A bit sneaky in my opinion! I think the LCAMC won again.

Inter-Regional Road Rally 1989

The first Inter-Association road rally ran in 1989 and was hosted by the London Counties Association of Motor Clubs (LCAMC) using the famous Alnite Rally run on the 25/26th November by RAFMSA, Northampton & DMC and Huntingdonshire MC.

Here are some more detailed commments by Nigel Mollett:
Now lets see if I can remember back to the first Inter-Association Road Rally.... Ah ha! I've found a Transmission mag from December 1989 which has an article from Bernie Marsden about the event. It was the Alnite Rally, run on 25/26th November 1989. Organised by RAFMSA, Northampton & DMC and Huntingdonshire MC. Principal organiser/COC Brian Otridge. Started in Peterborough. 13 association teams ran (with 1,2 or 3 crews). LCAMC came 1st association. ACSMC came a close second by only 9 minutes. ACSMC provided each of their 3 crews with 50 quid towards expenses! ACSMC crews included Me and Bernie Marsden, and Terry Schraider and Chas Davies. I can't remember who the other crew was but I don't think it was a WCC pairing. The winners were from Scotland (and they complained that the navigation was too easy!).

Comment of the rally before the event came from Terry Schraider - "Usually there are half a dozen possible winners on an event. This time, almost anyone could win it!"
